Puerto Montt, the German influenced capital of the beautiful Lake Region, is located on the northern tip of the Reloncavi sound, offering its visitors the most important harbor of southern Chile and the picturesque bay of Angelmo, which has been an important source of inspiration for many important painters. In Puerto Montt, the busy and rustic Angelmo market is definitely a worthwhile visit; here you will have the chance to visit the largest handicraft market of the region, and will be able to see where much of this area's trade of seafood takes place. This port side city is also the starting point for visiting the island of Chiloe, with its amazing stilt houses (palafitos) and with the Ancud fortress, which stood as the last bastion of the Spanish Kingdom's power in Chile; as well as the sailing port for fantastic cruises, which sail through the magnificent Patagonian fjords, visiting amongst many beautiful places, the imposing San Rafael lagoon with its impressive glaciers. |
