Punta Arenas, the southernmost continental city in the world, which was once known as the Sandy Point, is located on the northern shore of the Magellan Strait, which served as the natural sea route between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans before the construction of the Panama Canal. The typical end of the 19th century architecture, with its Opera House and its several palaces of wealthy livestock businessmen of the time, characterize a time of splendor of Punta Arenas. Today, this British and Croatian influenced city, is an interesting starting point for travelling to the world famous Torres del Paine National Park, for several Patagonic cruises, and many interesting day activities and excursions. |
