SAN RAFAEL
This National Park of Chile, was declared a world reserve by UNESCO
in 1979, 1,242,000 hectares of millennium old beauty, located at latitude
46º- 45º south, of the Chilean Patagonia. A Spanish sailor discovered
this fabulous spot, four centuries ago, today it has been converted
into one of the natural beauties of Chile that is of major international
importance. The Ice of San Rafael dates back more than 30,000 years,
the face of the glacier has a width of 2 kilometers, its towers of ice
elevate more than 70 meters and plunge down 230 meters below sea level.
The length of the glacier is 15 kilometers and its origin is the snow
covered San Valentin, of the Southern Ice Fields, of the Andes Mountain
Chain. The blue of the ice and its constant ice slides have converted
it into an international show piece, with ice floes of different sizes
and colors, it is a spectacle that is unique in the world.
QUINTRALCO FJORD
An ancient riverbed Glacier surrounded by mountains, with exuberant
and unique vegetation. Here is where you find the Thermal Pool facilities
of Skorpios, with warm pure water of volcanic origin, where you can
enjoy Thermal and Steam Baths. Walking along the beautiful trails that
wind through this southern austral forest and sport fishing are some
of the other activities of this Fjord of great beauty. In 1996, the
Chilean Counsel of Monuments and Parks declared this place a Nature
Sanctuary.
VILLAGES AND CITIES
Along the routes of the Cruise Vessel Skorpios you can choose to visit
different cities and villages, such as: Puerto Montt, with its German
handicraft and customs; Coyhaique - surrounded by rivers and mountains;
Castro - mythological land of legends and handicrafts. Villages such
as: Puerto Aguirre - with its fishermen and their children as hosts;
Quielen - village of typical Chilote fishermen, and Puerto Chacabuco.
FLORA AND FAUNA
The flora and fauna of these latitudes have a spectacular beauty. The
copious rainfall creates a humid southern forest, rich with a great
quantity of species of trees, plants and flowers, which impress its
visitors. Some of the highlights are: the flowers of the Chilco or Fuchsia,
the great ferns, Cypress Trees, Cinnamon Trees, Lengas and the millennium
old larch trees. The fauna of the Patagonia is of great variety: Sea
Wolves, Dolphins, Whales, Sea Lions, Vapor Ducks, Cormoranes, Swans
and Fishers, delight the passengers of the Skorpios.
